Prati is in one of the districts ("Rioni") of Rome Historical Centre and incorporates the Vatican City. Its logo is the shape of Hadrian's Mausoleum (known today as St Angel Castle). During Roman times the territory of present Prati district consisted of vineyards and reed beds, part of the property of Domitia, wife of Emperor Domitian, from which the area was named Horti Domitii ("Domitian's Gardens") and later Neronis Prata ("Nero's Meadows"). In the Middle Ages the area was called Prata Sancti Petri ("St.Peter's Meadows") due to the adjacent Basilica. Until 1870, there stretched a vast expanse of natural meadows, fields and even swamps, dotted -especially in the area of the slopes of Monte Mario- of some farmhouse and the rest completely deserted; the area was known as Prati di Castello (referring to St.Angel Castle). After 1870 (the year of the annexation of Rome to the newly born Kingdom of Italy) were the first interventions of housing and urbanization, completed in the first half of the twentieth century.
