THEWESLEY ROME is located on the second floor of an old building formerly the property of the Friars of St.Celsus, which faces Ponte Sant’Angelo. The five storey building was bought by the Evangelism Committee in Italy in 1876 from the General Board for State Property for 329,507 Lire thanks to the generosity of friends throughout Italy, in England and in Scotland. The building was inaugurated solemnly on Sunday 18th March 1877. The Hall of the College on the first floor was inaugurated under the chairmanship of Mr. MacDougall, with addresses from Professors Gavazzi (Chaplain of Giuseppe Garibaldi Italian General and hero of the unification of the State of Italy) and Henderson. Among the observers there were representatives of the American Church and of the Methodist Episcopal Mission, the German ministers of the churches in Rome and Florence , the representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society and others. Not long before this event, the idea that the preaching of the Gospel would soon take place in Rome would have seemed a fantasy, instead it was 1877 when on the bank of the Tiber , opposite Castel Sant’Angelo at a short distance from St.Peter’s and the Vatican...
