The district Villanova (Biddanoa in Sardinian) is one of four historic districts of Cagliari, founded in the thirteenth century at the foot of the eastern slope of the hill on which stands the Castle. The first inhabitants of the area were the farmers of the nearby campidano who entertained business relationships with the city. Villanova was born when these farmers decided to settle closer to Cagliari, in order to have facilitation in their business. Until the early decades of the twentieth century, the agricultural origin of the neighborhood was also proved by the numerous orchards and vineyards around him. The district now has with its old part, situated between Via Garibaldi and the embankment of Viale Regina Elena, characterized by simple houses, which develop on one or two floors, several churches and a number of shops. The district and the square have been renovated, retaining its own characteristics. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the square you will find a small market, consisting mostly of stalls of artisans displaying handmade creations, books and homemade honey.
